Contemporary Collage Workshop

Onwards Studio

In this workshop, Newcastle-based artist Holly Leonardson introduced participants to the world of contemporary collage and provided an overview on the creative process and materials. Key examples of other collage artist's work was provided by Holly to illustrate various techniques, styles and approaches. Participants will be guided through the creative process to create up to two ready-to-frame artworks of their own.

During the workshop participants spent some time cutting out the images, colours, patterns and textures that they were drawn to from a curated selection of vintage books and magazines, experimenting with different cutting, layering and gluing techniques demonstrated by Holly to open up the possibilities of image making. Participants had time to consider different arrangements and combinations to create beautiful, surreal, humorous, minimal or abstract compositions before gluing their final work.

At the end of the session, participants took home up to two finished collages on quality cotton watercolour paper, and any additional collages made straight onto whole pages from vintage books, plus any leftover cut outs to continue collaging at home.

No prior experience necessary. All materials provided - includes a scissors, cutting knives, cutting mat, glue, quality paper, vintage books and magazines.
